This Destroy This Mad Brute poster reproduces Harry R. Hopps’s powerful First World War recruitment poster, published in 1917 to encourage Americans to enlist. The dramatic image of a giant ape carrying a club marked “Kultur” and a captive woman was designed as wartime propaganda, symbolising the perceived threat of German militarism. Its bold composition and unforgettable imagery made it one of the most recognisable American posters of the war.
